Where we come from...

Nations of York Collective (NYC) is a grassroots-initiative set up in 2017 by York based friends from all around.

We believe in the importance of celebrating diversity in our local community, in the universal power of food to bring people together and in our moral responsibility to help people in need, no matter where they come from.

In Italy we take food seriously! We deeply care about what we eat and the way it is cooked.  And this is true for the everyday life, not only for big events and celebrations. Cooking is a great way to let people know how much we care about them. Sharing a homemade dish with a friend means welcome him in your life. Besides this emotional element, there is also a cultural aspect to it. Preparing Italian food for my kids is my very personal way to bring them near to the traditions of our country and to the values that I hope will guide them through life: family, love and respect.

I grew up in a big Armenian family in Buenos Aires that always had cooking at the heart of all gatherings. Since then, I have learnt to see food as an important element in understanding my history and the history of the many countries where I have lived and worked before.

I love being part of the community wherever I go, and I enjoy sharing bits of my learnings in life, from motherhood and academic research to DYI and cooking. Mexican food is my passion, and living away from home has brought me closer to my roots. I hope you join me and enjoy delicious food and warm stories that my grandmothers, mum, aunties and other wonderful women have passed to me in endless hours of caring, sharing and laughing in the kitchen.

I am an immigrant, a mother and a not-so-bad cook.  For me, traditional cooking is a fascinating endeavour because it is both: a knowledge at risk to be forgotten, and at the same time, a powerful act of love and generosity, that everyone can easily relate to.
